Belle Ensemble 2018-2019 Season Concerts

Two Roads Converged

This program explores the marriage of American poetry and the music of American composers.  This program highlights classic American poetry, much of which was not originally conceived as lyrics for music, and which nevertheless has come to serve as the inspiration of enduring and compelling vocal and choral works.  Featured major work,

Frostiana, poems by Robert Frost, set to music by Randall Thompson, is coupled with selections highlighting poetry of Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, and Langston Hughes, among others.

Christmas with Charles Dickens

The ghost of Charles Dickens makes a yuletide visit to the Belle Ensemble!  Merry old Chuck emcees, as we celebrate the holiday with him in the fashion he might have preferred during his earthly sojourn.  This program for all ages consists of beloved 19th century English carols, works of Mendelssohn, Chopin and Mozart (C.D.'s fav's), pieces by Dickens' good friend Sir Arthur Sullivan, and colorful commentary from the Dickens himself.

Made in America

The Belle Ensemble explores some of the most noteworthy and uniquely American contributions to the world of vocal and choral music.  From William Billings to barbershop, vocal jazz to Michael Jackson, African American spirituals to contemporary a cappella, and more – American musicians have set fascinating new trajectories in vocal and choral music for more than three hundred years.  We’re delighted to bring you a tantalizing distillation of the best of American vocal innovation.
